Helicopter flights to Badrinath

Charter helicopters fly to Badrinath from Dehradun. A charter is booked with the operator for a group, not as a seat on a fixed timetable. There is no regular flight frequency and no set per-seat fare, so ask the operator for the full price, the flight date and the written terms before you pay.

The helicopter shuttle that the temple committee promotes belongs to Kedarnath, not to Badrinath. Its tickets are sold only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal. That shuttle is no proof that a similar IRCTC service exists for Badrinath, and Kedarnath fares do not apply here.

For most visitors who are short of time and want a flight to Badrinath, a charter from Dehradun is the only flight option. Everyone else is served well by the road, which is described on the Rishikesh to Badrinath page.

What a flight does not change

Four points that stay the same by air or by road.

Altitude

A flight does not remove the altitude effect. The health advice for the Char Dham asks you to allow time to adapt even when you travel by helicopter. Badrinath lies at around 3,100 m.

Registration

You still register for the yatra, which costs 0 INR for travelers, and you still carry the registration letter and your ID.

Registration steps โ†’

Darshan

A flight ticket does not guarantee a VIP darshan or a faster line. Darshan follows the rules of the temple on the day.

Darshan and puja โ†’

Weather

Mountain flights depend on visibility and wind. Keep a spare day in your plan, and confirm what happens to your fare if a flight is cancelled.

How to book a flight with care

Use official channels and ask for terms.

Kedarnath

Use the IRCTC HeliYatra portal, which the temple committee names as the only booking route for Kedarnath shuttle tickets.

Badrinath

Deal with registered charter operators. Ask for the date, the passenger count, the total price, baggage and weight limits and the cancellation terms in writing.

Children and seniors

Rules for children, infants and seniors depend on the operator. Ask before you book, and do not assume that a discount applies.

Around the temple

The village of Mana lies 4 km from Badrinath and fits into a day around the temple visit.

The road as the alternative

Most visitors still reach Badrinath on the ground.

From Dehradun airport the road to Badrinath is about 317 km. From Rishikesh it is about 300 km, and from Haridwar about 320 km, with a drive of 10 to 12 hours. The road runs through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag and Joshimath. There is no train to Badrinath. A flight shortens the trip but not the wait for the weather, and it does not cover the days you need at altitude.

Comparing the two, a flight suits a short stay and a tight schedule, while the road suits travelers who want to adapt slowly and see Rudraprayag and Joshimath on the way. See the getting there page for the route and the transfer options.

Badrinath helicopter: frequently asked questions

Is there a helicopter to Badrinath?

How much does a Badrinath helicopter cost?

There is no set per-seat fare. The operator sets the price, so ask for the total cost in writing, including baggage and cancellation terms.

Can I book Badrinath on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal?

The portal is the only booking route for the Kedarnath shuttle. It does not show that a Badrinath shuttle exists there.

Does a helicopter flight include darshan?

No. A flight ticket does not secure a darshan slot or a VIP line.

Do I still need to acclimatize if I fly?
