Where to stay in Badrinath: the main options
The town around the temple has five kinds of lodging: private hotels, ashrams, dharamshalas, the GMVN tourist rest house and the rest houses of the temple committee, BKTC. The quality, heating and rules differ a lot between them, so a good choice starts with the type.
Lodging is a separate booking from the darshan or a puja. A puja receipt does not include a room. If you want transport and rooms arranged together, compare the Badrinath tours and packages before you book beds one by one.

Hotels, ashrams and dharamshalas compared
What each type means for you. Prices change by season and date.
| Type | Run by | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Private hotels | Private owners | Rooms and standards differ widely, so confirm details in writing |
| Ashrams | Religious communities | Pilgrim lodging, rules and facilities differ by ashram |
| Dharamshalas | Pilgrim rest houses | Simple pilgrim lodging, so confirm what is included |
| GMVN Yatri Niwas | State tourism operator | Rooms booked for dates through the operator |
| BKTC rest houses | Temple committee | Rest houses of the temple administration |
A dormitory bed, a double room and a pilgrim dharamshala are different products, so compare like with like and never judge by one low price. For most first-time visitors, the safest choice is the type that confirms your dates and what the room includes in writing.

Badrinath tours with transport and lodging
Yatra tours and packages from Delhi, Haridwar and Rishikesh, with live prices and availability.
Choosing a location near the temple
Near the temple is a location category, not a promise of a walking time. No lodging stands inside the sanctuary. Ask the lodging how far the walk to the main entrance is and whether there is a steep or uneven stretch, especially if you travel with older family members.
Mana, the village on the Saraswati, lies about 4 km from Badrinath and is a day visit, see Mana village. If you break the drive on the way, Joshimath is the town on the road, see Auli and Joshimath.

The GMVN Yatri Niwas
A state option with its own tariff.
GMVN is the tourism operator of the state, and it runs a Yatri Niwas in Badrinath. Room prices depend on your dates, so check the price on the operator's site instead of relying on an old figure. Do not mix a dormitory bed price with a room price when you compare.
Dates first
Choose your dates before you check availability. The same room costs differently across the season.
Written confirmation
Keep the confirmation with the dates, the room type and the stated price. Show your ID at check-in.
What to ask before you book
Details that decide whether the stay is comfortable at this height.
Heating and hot water
Nights are cold in every month of the season. Ask whether the room has heating and hot water, and at which hours.
Meals
Ask whether meals are included, what the meal times are and whether there are options for special diets.
Cancellation and rain
Rain and landslides can delay arrival. Ask what happens if the road closes and you arrive a day late.
Children, age and access
Ask about stairs, the walk from the road and any rules for children. Do not assume wheelchair access or lifts.
Trekkers with a permit
If you apply for an Inner Line Permit for a restricted trekking area, the permit portal advises that you secure lodging first.
Winter and the closed season
The temple closes for the winter, and in 2026 the closing was announced for 16 November. That does not mean hotels stay open. Do not plan a winter stay in Badrinath, and check the dates on the opening dates page before you reserve anything. For a winter trip, Auli is the region's place for snow and skiing.
There is no general rule that every lodging requires a reservation. In the pilgrim weeks it is wise to book ahead anyway, and to arrive early in the day so you can adjust to the height.

Badrinath hotels: frequently asked questions
What kinds of lodging does Badrinath have?
Private hotels, ashrams, dharamshalas, a GMVN tourist rest house and BKTC rest houses. Each works differently, so confirm the room type and the price for your dates.
Can I stay inside the temple?
No. Lodging is in the town around the temple. Ask your lodging how long the walk to the entrance is.
Is a room included with a puja?
No. The puja receipt does not include lodging, so you book the room separately.
Are hotels open in winter?
Do not count on it. The temple closes for the winter, and a closed temple is no sign that hotels stay open.
How much does a room cost?
It depends on the type, the date and the season. Dormitory beds, double rooms and pilgrim dharamshalas are different products, so ask for the price for your dates in writing.
Do I need to reserve a room in advance?
There is no general rule that every lodging requires a reservation. In the pilgrim weeks it is wise to book ahead anyway, and to arrive early in the day so you can adjust to the height.
